Canberra has an excellent theatre and entertainment scene, with hundreds of shows occurring daily and including everything from small art house shows to performances featuring international stars. The Canberra Times provides entertainment listings of up and coming gigs in the area.

The two largest venues in town and the two most regularly frequented by international calibre acts are the Royal Theatre and the AIS Arena; however, the live music scene is not limited to these big venues and many great shows are put on at local clubs and pubs in Canberra.

The Gypsy Bar in downtown Canberra is a great spot to catch live jazz and retro acts, as well as local performance artists such as poets and theatre troupes. Tilley's in Lyneham district and the Northside Tavern in Belconnen are traditional stops for some of Australia's most popular pop acts, while for those with more classical tastes the School of Music regularly holds concerts. In addition, the city regularly hosts visiting chamber orchestras.


The city is full of options for theatre and cinema, with large cinema complexes in the town centre and two great independent theatres, the Ronin Independent-Centre Cinema and the Electric Shadows Cinema.
